A Brief Overview of Certain Aspects of the Thought of Petyr Demianovich Ouspensky -- Essay by Michael Presley on P. D. Ouspensky. "It is my hope that this brief survey will, in small measure, place the ideas of Petyr Ouspensky in at least some sort of historical context within modern philosophic thought. Also, it is my express intention to convey Ouspensky''s ideas separately from whatever attribution the writings offer towards the popularization of the legacy of G.I. Gurdjieff. This is, of course, not in any way meant to discount Ouspenky''s acumen as an interpreter of Gurdjieff''s ''Russian period'' but, generally, the pre-Gurdjieff writings have been relegated to a position of secondary importance in favor of his expositions of those specific teachings he learnt from Gurdjieff. And while this in itself would be more than a suitable legacy for most it is nevertheless the case that Ouspensky remains both an original thinker and a creative synthesizer whose writings stand in spite of the knowledge he gained as G.''s student. Indeed, at least from a philosophical and productive literary standpoint there are grounds for thinking that his native thought would likely have matured in important ways had his meeting with G. never occurred."

Gurdjieffian Thought in the New Age -- Online book. Former California cult member James Westly''s attempt to summarize the basic ideas of the work teaching. "George Gurdjieff and Peter Ouspensky left behind them a rich legacy of practical thought known as the Fourth Way. The ideas they brought to the western world did not originate with them, nor did they originate from any man, but are, rather, universal principles that have been widely disseminated upon this planet in a variety of languages and forms, and emanate from a higher source. This online book gives an introduction to the ideas and techniques of the Fourth Way and provides practical guidance and many exercises for interested reader."

The System, Contents -- Online essays. Former California cult member and strict hierarchy cult member Gregory W. Goodwin''s (AKA "Osokin") wordy attempt to summarize the basic ideas of the work teaching. "I speak of the Work ideas while representing no official or organized authority and with my own responsibility. My understanding of these ideas comes primarily from the teaching presented Gurdjieff, Ouspensky and Rodney Collin studies I have come to understand work required to escape. I understand any human machine, I understand the the possible strengths humans are chances of survival. I know that it life, it is possible to avoid the repetitions captured in the role of the same such a fate myself. I am here at this consciousness as I am capable, this ascending bearing. In the pursuit of that body of work which I have entitled The System." "The Work information that both these groups traffic in comes more or less from Gurdjieff by way of various intermediaries. For the Gurdjieff Foundation it is Mme. De Salzmann who is their organizational prophet, in modern times her son seems to have somehow genetically inherited the wisdom of leadership. One can still feel the residual power feature radiating from the ''act'' of the present members that obviously came down the strictly regimented line of command from the personality of De Salzmann. For the Fellowship of Friends it is their "Teacher," Bob Burton, a self-proclaimed man number seven, who interprets the esoteric texts and points the way to ''consciousness.'' One can observe radiating from the membership the imitated "serene dominance" persona that Burton has used successfully to make himself the head minister of a multimillion dollar enterprise. Burton also claims to see the future and has made several grandiose predictions about cataclysmic events that have failed to materialize. Though these groups claim the knowledge as their own property, in my estimation they in fact own nothing of value that is original to their own efforts. If anything the original quality of the knowledge has become slanted and subjective in the hands of these organizations. It is my opinion that both these organizations have twisted the ideas of the Fourth Way into a new and peculiar form of false personality that both groups now mistake for a sign of development. "Essence" in these ''schools'' is only found in the unwitting delight of new people who unfortunately believe they have found C Influence."
